R&R in Hawaii? - Day 8

If you would like to see Hawaii Photos please click the BS Family Photos to the right of here.

Spent Wednesday at Spencer Beach, north of us. It was our first time at a “white” sandy beach and it was well worth the drive. The kids and adults needed a free day to play and relax. The beach was calm enough that the kids got to play in the water without having to be watched with eagle eyes. In turn the adults could play and relax as well. It was a clear enough day to see Maui from there. Neat. Nice day! We then drove to the Northern most part of the island, stopping to see Kamehameha, then driving until we could drive no longer.

Thursday we headed to Hilo and some water falls. They were fun to see but really thought we would get to actually walk up to them and feel the water falling. Oh well. Driving around the island really reminds me a lot of Oregon. Oh, the plants are different but the topography really feels very similar. Kind of a home like feel which has been neat for me.

Thursday we drove south to the volcano, for me that was the best trip! We were told it would be colder because of the elevation but it was still warm. The view from the top was breathtaking and even better at the bottom. The hike was similar to hiking Crater Lake, a few turn backs and long, but sure worth the trip. We didn't walk the whole base but got to feel some of the heat of the volcano and that was really neat. Carried the kids back out, which made them happy. Very tired at this point I really enjoyed hiking and sight seeing!

We drove the rest of the way around the volcano, stopping to see other sites and walk through the steam vents....HOT....hot.....HOT! So much to see and really not enough time to do it all in a relaxing way. We made it down to the ocean so see the petroglyph's, timing it to see the glow of the lava at night. Timing was good but the rain came and we could not see anything other than the steam plume! And when it rains...well...it RAINS! Again...are we really not in Oregon? :O)

Today (Friday) is a day of rest...sort of. Going to hit some stores and just walk around a bit, otherwise we will hang out at the house. We wanted to sleep in today too...still up at 6am...sheesh...no quiet time for us here. haha

Actually he does care and this morning we had another 15 min or so fit because we didn't bring his red shorts.
He get's over it though and even forgets.

i have a picture of me in the lava tube...long pants, rain jacket with hood up and an open umbrella...heck it rained as hard there as outside the tube...but the water was deeper and i got my feet wet...oh yes, no steam vents or hot holes that day, just clouds above and below us...but it WAS fun...
